Moving to the Cloud: Expectation vs Reality

Date 01 October 2024

In the payments world, any downtime impacts customer trust, reputation and the bottom line. When payment systems are hosted in datacentres, this is addressed by being cautious and making long-term commitments on capacity to ensure performance. Cloud has changed that model due to its flexibility and granularity. However, in moving to the cloud, new issues need to be dealt with.

Join Nik Sathe, a seasoned tech and payments CTO who has worked with leading brands, including PayPal, American Express and Google, and current CTO of Blackhawk Network, as he talks about the shift to cloud, particularly how a change in organisational thinking is needed when it comes to tackling risk.

Nik will also discuss the importance of optimising cloud engineering and data analytical skills, ensuring the business realises both its return on investment and the promised benefits of the move, and how rewarding engineers for the right behaviours can help leverage the cloud benefits.

The difference in these approaches is a reduction in technical debt, a more dynamic engineering team and million-dollar opex improvement on the bottom line.

Join Nik Sathe, CPO & CTO Blackhawk Network, and Capacitas co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Dr Manzoor Mohammed, for our latest audio event to get his perspective on the following topics:

  • What life was like before the cloud
  • Why Blackhawk Network wanted to move to the cloud
  • Benefits of moving to the cloud for payment systems and what’s needed to realise those benefits
  • What actually happens after moving to the cloud
  • What effect the shift had on staff
  • What happens next and the role of CTO in making it happen
  • How GenAI will impact payments

Blackhawk Network is a US payments firm with $30B in annual load value, 37,000 corporate/government partners, approximately 1B cards issued annually, and $4B+ rewards fulfilled annually.
